Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets Betting Preview
Sunday Night Baseball features a battle of NL East rivals as the Philadelphia Phillies (11-11) square off with the New York Mets (15-7). The Mets will host this one at Citi Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:08 pm ET.
After losing the opener 3-0, the Phillies bounced back with a 4-1 win on Saturday. Kyle Gibson went 4.1 innings, allowing one run (no earned) on two hits and five walks.
Kyle Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins led the offensive attack for Philadelphia as each homered in the victory.
Adam Otfavino took the loss in relief, giving up three runs in 0.2 innings. New York only mustered four hits, including two from Mark Canha.
The Mets are the favorite playing at home. They are -171 to win while the Phillies’ money line sits at +157. The run line features Philadelphia +1.5.
Phillies Look To Move Above .500
At 11-11, this isn’t quite the start Philadelphia was hoping for to start the season. Despite their early struggles, they have won seven of their last ten and will look to move above .500 Sunday night.
Taking the mound for Philadelphia will be Zach Eflin. In four games, he is 1-1 with a 3.20 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. He has 15 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched.
Despite hitting just .169, Kyle Schwarber leads the team with five home runs. He also has 13 runs batted in and 11 runs scored.
Many Phillies’ hitters have to face Max Scherzer in their careers. Bryce Harper has taken the right deep once while J.T. Realmuto has homered off of him twice.
Mets Look To Keep Rolling
After a disappointing 2021, the Mets have been one of the hottest teams in baseball this season. Not only are they tied for the best record in the National League, but they are also tied for the second-best winning percentage in all of baseball.
One of their biggest offseason additions will take the mound for this primetime matchup in “Mad” Max Scherzer. In four starts, he is a perfect 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and he has 33 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched.
Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor have gotten off to terrific starts for New York. Alonso is hitting .250/.316/.459 with four home runs and 17 runs batted in.
Not to be outdone, Lindor is hitting .282/.367/.482 with four home runs and 13 runs batted in.
Alonso has homered off of Eflin, but Lindor has struggled, going hitless in seven at bats.
Phillies/Mets Betting Prediction
Even though the Phillies have been playing better ball as of late, it is hard to bet against the Mets in this one.
Not only have they been arguably one of the best teams in baseball in the early going, but anytime that Scherzer takes the mound, the Mets will have an advantage.
It would not be surprising to see the Phillies keep this close early on, but expect the Mets to pull away by the end of the game. Especially playing at Citi Field, the Mets will be in good shape to take down their rivals and finish off a series win.
Take the Mets to not only win this one but expect them to cover the -1.5 run line as well.
