Rocket Mortgage Classic On Tap For PGA

This weekend will be the PGA’s Rocket Mortgage Classic. It will be taking place at the Detroit Golf Club.

This will be a much weaker field than the Tour has seen since its return. However, it might help to take a look at how some of these golfers have played the past couple of weeks when betting.

Detroit Golf Club seems to be a spot for middle of the road golfers to succeed. Take a look at last year’s leaderboard and where they stood in the world rankings.

  • Nate Lashley: 346th
  • Doc Redman: 711th
  • Rory Sabbatini: 111th
  • Wes Roach: 421st
  • Joaquin Niemann: 97th
  • Cameron Tringale: 429th
  • Patrick Reed: 25th
  • Brandt Snedeker: 45th
  • Ted Potter, Jr.: 195th
  • Brian Stuard: 163rd

The course has been toughened up a bit, though. They are trying to avoid a score as low as they saw last year for the winner.

Betting Favorite

Bryson DeChambeau has shown to be the betting favorite going into the weekend. After gaining some weight, he has been bombing the ball off of the tee. His play has been good enough to move him to No. 10 in the world.

Here is a look at the updated odds from PointsBet:

Golfer/Odds

  • Bryson DeChambeau +650
  • Webb Simpson +1000
  • Patrick Reed +1400
  • Tyrrell Hatton +1500
  • Viktor Hovland +1800
  • Hideki Matsuyama +1800
  • Im-Sung Jae +2200
  • Rickie Fowler +3000

After Fowler, this list gets pretty exotic with players that are usually at super high odds. The absence of some of the top names has created an unusual odds board.

DeChambeau will be teeing off at 1 pm ET with a featured group that also includes Reed and Matsuyama. This will be one of the marquee groups to watch a winner emerge from. All of these players are within the top six in odds to win the tournament.

Another feature group will be going off early in the morning that consists of Fowler, Simpson, and Nate Lashley.

Lashley won the tournament last year as a longshot. He posted a -25 at the end of the day on Sunday.

It’s likely that Fowler would be sitting out of this tournament if he wasn’t directly sponsored by Rocket Mortgage. He has missed both cuts in the tournaments he has played since golf has been back. Last year, he tied for 46th place.

Popular Pick

Many people like Patrick Reed to do well this weekend, including Golf.com’s Jessica Marksbury.

When asked her pick to win, she said, “Patrick Reed. Reed already has a pre-pandemic win on the books (February’s World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship) and finished strong at last week’s Travelers with a Sunday 64. If last year’s scores are any indication, you’ll have to go low to claim the title in Detroit, and Patrick is well capable.”

But this tournament has shown that there might be someone emerge from the bottom to take the win. It will be interesting to see if the toughened course creates a different outcome.
