NCAA Basketball News and Notes: Tech Players Test Positive

Members of the Texas Tech men’s basketball team tested positive for the coronavirus as they returned to campus. The university said that there were positive cases, but they wouldn’t reveal the exact number.

The athletes who tested positive, which happened to other student-athletes as well, have been quarantined and are being monitored by sports medicine staff and physicians. The team did participate in some of the protesting that happened in Lubbock.

Robert Morris Headed To Horizon League

Robert Morris is heading to the Horizon League after playing in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris will officially join the conference on July 1.

The Horizon League will be a step up over NEC play. The men’s and women’s basketball teams have had great success in the NEC and should be a good addition to the Horizon League. Purdue-Fort Wayne will also join the conference to round out the 12 teams.

Drake Basketball Involved in Lawsuit

A Drake student is suing the university after being shot in the head at a party. Nathaniel Miller Jr. claims that a men’s basketball coach told Tremell Murphy, a player for the Bulldogs, to deny involvement in the shooting.

Murphy claimed that Miller had slipped and fell and hit his head when police arrived. Murphy legally owned the gun. The shooting occurred on Aug. 31, 2019.

Drake coach Darian DeVries has not commented but is not named in the lawsuit. Murphy only played five games last year due to a knee injury but was a big contributor his freshman year. Murphy was placed on probation and was given a suspended 30-day jail sentence.

Schedules Starting To Come Out

Several teams have started announcing their 2020-21 non-conference schedules. A few of the games that have been highlighted this week are Nebraska versus Creighton, Providence vs. Connecticut, Arizona State vs. Grand Canyon, and Michigan opening against Georgia State.

A lot of non-conference schedules will start to become more clear over the next few weeks.

Wake Forest Picks Up Transfer

Jalen Johnson, a grad transfer from Tennessee, has decided to attend Wake Forest after originally committing to East Tennessee State. He is following former ETSU coach Steve Forbes, who took the Wake Forest job after Danny Manning was fired.

Johnson will join Forbes for his first season as coach of the Demon Deacons. Johnson played in 31 games for the Volunteers, averaging 3.5 points and two rebounds. Johnson should compete for a starting spot for the Demon Deacons.
