Shea Patterson To Return For The Wolverines
Quarterback Shea Patterson confirmed on Friday that he will be returning to Michigan for his final season of eligibility. For Patterson, after transferring to Michigan from Ole Miss after the 2017 season, he just finished his third year of playing. For Michigan, they have to be ecstatic to get him back, particularly after several other players have already decided to enter the NFL draft, with some, including Rashan Gary, Karan Higdon, and Devin Bush, planning to skip their bowl game. This season, Patterson was 188 for 290 for 2,364 yards passing, 21 touchdowns versus just 5 interceptions. That was good for 153.8-passer rating. He also had 268 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on 66 carries.
Army Puts On Spectacular Showing In The Armed Forces Bowl
To say that Army dominated the Armed Forces Bowl against the University of Houston might be a bit of an understatement. The Army Black Knights went for over 500 yards on the ground and tied a record for most points scored in a bowl game when they dominated with a 70-14 win over the Coogers. It did not help that Houston was without some of its star players, including defensive tackle Ed Oliver, who is preparing for the NFL Draft, but it was still awfully embarrassing to watch.
For Army, they were led by quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr, who was 3 for 3 throwing with 70 yards but really made his presence felt on the ground. Hopkins had 11 carries for 170 yards and 5 touchdowns. Army actually had 6 players with 25 yards or more rushing and 4 players with rushing touchdowns. This was their 11th win of the season, capping off a remarkable season and leaving head coach Jeff Monken now 29-10 since taking over.
For Houston, it was a dreadful game, and it will be back to drawing board for next season, now down a couple of coaches. After firing their defensive coordinator last month, it now appears that they will have an opening at offensive coordinator as Kendal Briles has resigned from his position and is set to join Willie Taggart’s staff at Florida State in the same position.
Zach Wilson Perfect In Potato Bowl
In other bowl game news, Zach Wilson of BYU led the Cougars to a 49-18 win over Western Michigan in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. While that in itself may not be that remarkable, what is remarkable is that Wilson was perfect on the day, going 18 for 18 for 317 yards and 4 touchdowns. He set a school record for consecutive completions in a game and came one shy of tying a bowl record. On the season, he threw for 1,578 yards and 12 touchdowns in only 7 starts (he did not start the season as the starter). Given that he is only a freshman, it will be exciting to see where Wilson can go from here in future seasons for BYU.
Miami Quarterback’s Availability In Question After Posted Video
Sometimes you would love to engrain in young men and women the ramifications social media can have. Unfortunately, it appears no one has taught that lesson to Miami quarterback N’Kosi Perry. Perry has posted two questionable videos this season to his social media, and one has resurfaced this week. Earlier in the season, he had posted a video showing him in a car flashing a big stack of cash, which always raises red flags for student athletes. Now, a video has resurfaced that he posted earlier in the year that includes sexual content. No decision has been made on Perry’s availability for their bowl game against Wisconsin, but it certainly is not a good look for Miami. Perry, who is a freshman, took over as quarterback midway through the season and threw for just over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Two LSU Players Questioned In Shooting
Two LSU players are being questioned in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helair and linebacker Jared Small both have been questioned after they called 9-1-1 following the shooting. Details are sparse at this point, but according to their attorney, the shooting was said to be self-defense. Clyde Edwards-Helair has rushed for 626 yards and 7 touchdowns on 136 carries this season. At this time, there is no indication as to whether this will impact their availability for LSU’s PlayStation Fiesta Bowl against UCF.
Urban Meyer To Become Assistant Athletic Director
Urban Meyer is preparing for life after coaching, and it appears that it will be both with Ohio State and still in the athletic realm. Meyer will coach the Buckeyes in their Rose Bowl game against Washington, but after that, it appears as if he will be taking the role of assistant athletic director behind Gene Smith. Having dealt with health issues all season long, Meyer has led the Buckeyes to a 12-1 record but just missed out on the national championship 4-team playoffs. Marred by controversy to start the season, which led to Meyer serving a suspension to start the season, Meyer just never seemed right this season on the sidelines, more than once looking physically ill. He has been battling through an arachnoid cyst in his brain and finally acknowledged that it has taken its toll on him coaching. While future plans may be in place, it won’t stop Meyer from trying to make sure his Buckeyes can win his last game in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.
